The Georgetown Center for Youth Justice (CYJ) announced last month that veteran youth justice leader Marc Schindler will join the organization this month as research professor of the practice and senior fellow.
“Marc brings … the passion, expertise and drive needed to positively impact today’s justice system,” said CYJ Director Michael Umpierre.
At the forefront of Schindler’s new role is the leadership of a landmark initiative Forgotten Children: Unearthing the Lives Behind the Lost Burial Sites of Incarcerated Youth. This project is designed to identify and restore dignity to incarcerated children who were buried in unmarked graves across the United States, an endeavor that Schindler recently assisted with in Maryland as assistant secretary of the state’s Department of Juvenile Services.
Previous to his tenure in Maryland, Schindler served as executive director of the Justice Policy Institute, which closed its doors last year. Before that, he was general counsel and interim director for the Washington, D.C., Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.
In addition to the “Forgotten Children” project, Schindler will lend his expertise to the Public Information Officers Learning Collaborative and the Transforming Juvenile Probation Certificate Program.
“I am honored to be joining such a talented, hard-working staff at one of the premier institutions of higher learning,” Schindler said.
