A selection of The Imprint’s most impactful stories from the past year

Child welfare and youth justice systems are frequently impacted by lawsuits, and 2024 was no different. Here are just a few of the litigation-related stories covered by The Imprint this year:
A new nonprofit litigation firm in New York City issued a constitutional challenge to the city’s practices when it comes to child safety investigations and searches.
Several states have recently lifted statutes of limitation for survivors of abuse to file legal claims against their alleged perpetrators, leading to scores of lawsuits against child welfare and youth justice-related organizations and their facilities. In California, the potential for big verdicts from such lawsuits has contributed to a very shaky insurance market for the state’s nonprofit foster care providers.
Louisiana and North Carolina were both sued over conditions within their respective foster care systems, while Washington was sued over alleged religious discrimination.
