Reporter Nancy Marie Spears told the story of John Spence, a member of the Gros Ventre tribe, who twice a week leads groups of Indigenous youth to experience what he summarizes as the “healing power of horses.”
“Horses take us all the way back to our history before land was taken away,” Spence told The Imprint on a July visit to the Oregon ranch where he runs equine therapy sessions. “It’s a way of taking back our power.”
The package also featured a documentary podcast brought to you by the team at Gray Area Podcast, and a striking collection of photography by Josué Rivas. This work was singled out for the 2024 Breaking Barriers Award by the Institute for Nonprofit News.
