A selection of The Imprint’s most impactful stories from the past year
California has funded a statewide program aimed at connecting incarcerated youth with college coursework. The program was born of San Mateo’s Project Change, where those leaving detention settings can enroll at the nearby college and receive free books and tuition, priority enrollment, and a network of staff and volunteer mentors.
The movement to inspire youth behind bars to consider higher education comes as new research shows some concerning patterns with regular classwork in juvenile justice settings. Fostering Media Connections was joined by the founder of Project Change and one of the authors of that new research for a discussion on what works, and what doesn’t, when it comes to education inside.
