Los Angeles County has launched a new effort to address high rates of homelessness and mental health issues among young people, particularly those  who have grown up in its foster care and juvenile justice systems.  

Although states across the country now offer federally funded housing, job training and educational opportunities for foster youth after age 18, a new report reveals that stable housing, supportive family and social connections and access to college “remain beyond reach for too many young people with foster care experience.” 

Filing taxes could mean hundreds or thousands of dollars in tax refunds for transition age youth, including those who have been in foster care or homeless. In California, the federal and state Earned Income Tax Credit programs are the largest income transfer programs, lifting millions of people out of deep poverty. 

California has a new tool for tracking and assessing newly public, anonymous data about the outcomes for youth aging out of foster care.

National child welfare provider Youth Villages learned Sunday night it would receive $1 million from "Celebrity Wheel of Fortune."

Champions for young adults in foster care say that as many as 18,000 could age out of the system next week when a federal moratorium expires.
