The Trump administration released an overview of its 2018 budget today, and it proposes significant spending cuts for several of the federal agencies most involved in funding youth and family services.

The New York Life Foundation just announced a nearly $2 million investment to boost after-school and summer programs in several Mid-Atlantic Cities. Higher Achievement, a 41-year-old nonprofit based in D.C., will receive $1.89 million to serve youths in Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Richmond, Va.

The Department of Health and Human Services recently put out requests for solicitation for four new national centers it plans to establish. All four will focus on assisting state and local governments with aspects of their youth and family services portfolio.

George Lucas, he of “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” acclaim, has donated $25 million to After School Matters, a Chicago based organization serving the city’s youth. The gift was announced December 4 in Chicago at an event with Lucas, agency staff and Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Flint, Michigan www.mott.org (810) 238-5651 Afterschool Communications Project, Washington, D.C.,  $250,000 to provide targeted communications, policy, and research support to the statewide after-school networks and the after-school field as part of the Expanded Learning and Afterschool Project.

Brian Yazzie has been hired by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) as its national director of Native American Programs, a newly created position at the national level for the Atlanta-based nonprofit.
