Higher Achievement Nabs $1.9M After-School/Summer Grant

The New York Life Foundation just announced a nearly $2 million investment to boost after-school and summer programs in several Mid-Atlantic Cities. Higher Achievement, a 41-year-old nonprofit based in D.C., will receive $1.89 million to serve youths in Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Richmond, Va.

HHS Funding Several New National Centers on Youth Issues

The Department of Health and Human Services recently put out requests for solicitation for four new national centers it plans to establish. All four will focus on assisting state and local governments with aspects of their youth and family services portfolio.

George Lucas Donates $25 Million to Chicago Afterschool Program

George Lucas, he of “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” acclaim, has donated $25 million to After School Matters, a Chicago based organization serving the city’s youth. The gift was announced December 4 in Chicago at an event with Lucas, agency staff and Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
