Ashley Barron is a former foster youth who has learned resilience through some of the most challenging experiences of her life. Barron first entered kinship care with her cousin, which helped her stay connected to her culture and gave her a sense of belonging. However, when Barron later moved into a different foster home, she struggled with mental health, sibling separation, and losing parts of her cultural identity. Even though Barron did well academically, she often felt unseen and unsupported in her daily needs. Over time, Barron found her voice by advocating for herself. Barron asked for visits with siblings, found ways to provide for herself, and held onto her identity. These experiences have shaped who Barron is today and have inspired her to speak out, so that no child has to feel unwanted in a place that is supposed to be their home. Barron wants to share her story to push for change, highlight the importance of mental health and sibling rights, and remind others that children in foster care deserve not just survival, but love, dignity, and a true sense of belonging.
